History

The International School of the Sacred Heart in Tokyo (hereinafter referred to as ISSH) is one of global network of schools and universities under the direction of the religious order of the Sacred Heart.
On January 1st, 1908, four religious sisters of the Society of the Sacred Heart arrived in Yokohama, Japan, with the mission of starting a school for children that embraced the spirit, beliefs and goals of the Sacred Heart Order. The primary goal of the Society of the Sacred Heart was to provide an education for women that would prepare them for success in an ever-changing world. Over 100 years and a very rich history later, the same vision holds true.
ISSH is now an international school and community that for over a century has embraced diversity and provided an education that prepares young women from many countries and faiths for global citizenship.

Kindergarten

Co-educational Kindergarten of ISSH welcomes boys and girls in K3 - K5 (3-5 year old program). Students enjoy our spacious and well-equipped facilities designed specially with the needs of their early years learners in mind, both indoors and out.
Early years curriculum provides all the advantages of an internationally minded education based on best teaching practices from around the world joining the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) for science and social studies, Language Arts, and Mathematics to develop the whole child. Their Kindergarten program is rooted in a language-rich environment with an emphasis on learning through play and the concomitant development of large and fine motor skills alongside social skills.

Grade 1-12

From Grade 1 to Grade 12, ISSH only welcomes girls. They focus on developing the social, physical, emotional, spiritual and cultural growth.
In the Junior School, your daughter will be intellectually stimulated by the strong language arts program focusing on literacy, as well as by the International Primary Curriculum. Their program is designed to help each student realise her potential whilst developing relationships with other students and teachers to become a team member with an individual sense of purpose, capability and responsibility.
In support of working parents, they offer an Extended Day Program, which unlike traditional daycare, is a continuum of the day offering structure and play, homework completion time, and arts and crafts.

Middle School

In the Middle School, they provide an opportunity for your daughter to discover her own strengths and deal with her limitations positively in an unthreatening, nurturing and stimulating atmosphere. In addition to developing academic skills, they also focus on the development of strong social and life skills. The class sizes are small and the dedicated team of Middle School teachers pay close attention to each individual. They will support your daughter with the development of her independent study skills as well as those required to be an active participant in a group.
The academic and extracurricular programs work together to produce confident young women, who love to learn, are socially aware, prepared to show leadership, and are tolerant yet questioning members of any community they may later belong to.

High School

The high school prepares each girl to attend the university of her choice and they archive a 100% university acceptance every year.
As the oldest all girl international school in Japan, they have served as advocates for girls’ education for over a hundred years where they have experienced first hand the power of such a transformative learning environment on girls from diverse backgrounds. The highly academic and supportive university preparation program excites, challenges and stimulates each girl to find her own voice, develop her own interests, become a critical thinker who is unafraid to question the status quo.
The Advanced Placement program offered in grades 11 and 12 is perfectly suited to the needs of girls, as it offers the flexibility to tailor the curriculum to the student, not the other way around.
ISSH, where girls thrive, is a place for your daughter to be a feisty, resilient and confident woman in the future who is ready to go out into the world with a full understanding of her place in it, and the importance of giving back.

Culture

At ISSH, it is cool to work hard, and it is cool to be smart. All the parties, the Board, administration team, heads of departments, curriculum and subject leaders, faculty, staff, parents and the girls themselves, are active partners in creating a unique school that is a lighthouse for an internationally minded girls' school.
The Society of the Sacred Heart has a long tradition marked by a distinctive spirit of developing the whole person. In this spirit they work to foster a balance in students, to include their intellectual, spiritual, physical and emotional well being.
Studies are serious and foster reflection and thought, whilst at the same time, providing for the development of the creative and the aesthetic. Students are always viewed as responsible citizens of the world who have worthy contributions to offer society.
The school and its staff provide a warm, loving, and caring atmosphere for their students, within the community where you will experience diversity, which is designed to develop an understanding and appreciation of various faiths, cultures and traditions of the world, and especially the heritage of Japan itself.
